To identify elements of the Aboriginal Maternity Group Practice Program that contributed to the provision of a culturally competent service. The program employed Aboriginal Grandmothers, Aboriginal Health Officers and midwives working in a partnership model with pre-existing maternity services in the area. In an effort to address these issues, the Aboriginal Maternity Group Practice Program commenced in south metropolitan Perth, Western Australia, in 2011. Provision of culturally competent services may reduce these differences by improving access to timely and regular antenatal care. However, individual/family sessions addressing their personal concerns were also viewed as important.īeyond program content, participants valued a supportive environment emphasizing health over habitus.Pregnancy, labour and neonatal health outcomes for Australian Aboriginal women and their infants are frequently worse than those of the general population. Theme 4: Behavioral factors-Participants valued the opportunity to hear their peers' experiences. Theme 3: Nutrition-Hands on demonstrations and tangible suggestions were preferred over activities such as self-monitoring. Theme 2: Exercise-Fun, achievable activities were a valued means of making exercise enjoyable and building self-efficacy. Theme 1: Support/encouragement-Participants emphasized the importance of a supportive environment with a positive, compassionate approach from providers. Parents (38) and adolescents (25) were interviewed separately similar themes emerged. Transcripts were reviewed and themes identified. Semistructured interviews were performed (spring 2010) with past participants of the Michigan Pediatric Outpatient Weight Evaluation and Reduction program. Participants' perceptions may be associated with the high attrition rates reported by weight management programs.
